Formerly a Royal Air Force Base the airport lay used until 1974. The local council kept the name Kirmington until the entire area was re-named Humberside. Tenerife Airport is named Reina Sofia Airport, but is more commonly known as Tenerife South and was built in 1977 it was opened in 1978 by Queen Sofia of Spain after whom it was named.
